SMART AND SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT IN THAILAND
WHAT
Thailand ranked 13th in the ‘extreme risk’ category of those most vulnerable to future climate change impacts over the next 30 years on the Global Climate risk index.
Thailand's water resources face challenges from rapid economic and population growth, as well as climate change. Despite being in the equatorial region with high rainfall, uneven distribution leads to water scarcity in some areas and flooding in others.
HOW
In early 2023, the Thai government approved the draft Water Resources Action Plan 2024, under the 20-year Water Resources Management Master Plan, allocating a budget of 99 billion SEK. The government aims to address issues in six key areas within the water and wastewater segment:
- Water management for consumption
- Water security in the manufacturing sector
- Flood and flood management
- Water quality management and conservation of water resources
- Conservation and rehabilitation of degraded watershed forests and prevention of soil erosion
- Monitoring and management
