DRIVING INFRASTRUCTURE IN INDIA – WITH FOCUS TOWARDS AIRPORTS & PORTS
WHAT
- India's 1.5 trillion USD Gati Shakti National Master Plan for infrastructure development has plans to increase the capacity of airports and ports to support ‘Make In India’ program by providing ready infrastructure environment for national and international companies.
- Indian aviation industry is witnessing a massive growth, fueled by rising travel demand in the country. India is estimated to be the third largest domestic aviation market globally. The annual passenger air traffic is estimated to be 376 million as of 2024, up from 115 million as of 2021, growing at a robust CAGR of 48% over the period 2021-2024. The number of operational airports in the country have more than doubled from 74 in 2014 to 157 in 2024 and expected to increase to 350-400 by 2027.
- The government plans to spend 12 billion USD by 2025 to enhance aviation infrastructure. It has launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme – UDAN, which aims to enhance regional air connectivity from unserved and underserved airports across India.
- India Maritime Vision 2030 outlays investments of 12-15 billion USD for port modernization and new mega ports developments plan to improve capacity, connectivity and reduce logistics costs. Focus areas include:

- Develop Transshipment ports in South India.
- Convert 12 Major ports into Mega Ports with world-class infrastructure (>300 MTPA capacity) e.g., Mumbai port, JNPT Cluster, Paradip & Kandla.
- Port-linked Industrialization.
- All the Major Ports are to be made fully self-sustainable on electricity.
HOW
- India-Sweden Airports Platform is aimed at showcasing capabilities and use-cases to key Indian stakeholders. This platform will focus on showcasing Swedish know-how and industry expertise through technical workshops, networking activities and meetings between key stakeholders from India and Sweden.
- Focus would be to involve key decision makers in major airports, including Noida International Airport, DB Patil Navi Mumbai Airport, and Bangalore International Airport.
- India-Sweden Ports Program will comprehensively explore 3-4 major ports in India viz. Chennai, Mundra, JNPT etc. to confirm opportunities areas for ports development, modernization and also strategically explore near-by manufacturing clusters.
